Select an Air Filter
Choosing the right air filter is one of the easiest and best things that you can do for your air conditioner. It all starts with understanding how air filters are rated. There is a standardized MERV scale that all air filter manufacturers have to use. The lower the MERV rating, the fewer particles that an air filter will remove from the air.
Our recommendation is usually a rating of between 8 and 13 on the scale. You can read the filters to see what types of particles they filter out and select one that fits your needs and expectations. You can also read on the filter to see whether it is designed to last for one month or maybe a little longer, like three months.
Maximize Airflow
It’s so easy to put the air filter in place and just forget about it. Weeks can go by and it may still feel like you just changed out the air filter, when really it already needs to be replaced again. This is why we recommend that when you put a filter in place you write the day’s date on the edge.
This removes any doubt from the equation so that you will always know how long the air filter has been in place. Changing it out on time is the best way to maximize airflow. If an air filter gets too clogged, it can block airflow into the system and add a lot of strain to your air conditioner.
Prevent Water Leaks
Every month, you can also rinse out the condensate drain line of your air conditioner with a little bit of vinegar. Usually about half a cup is enough to do the job. The condensate drain line is a small pipe that extends up near the indoor portion of your AC unit. It will have a removable cap that you can take off and pour the vinegar into the line.
Doing this helps to eliminate both dust buildup and mold growth inside of the lines. When you don’t take time to rinse out the condensate drain line monthly with vinegar, mold spores and dust can create clogs that cause water to back up into your home, spilling out and potentially leaving water damage behind. Plus, as this water re-evaporates into the air, your humidity levels may be higher, making your home feel hotter than it really is.
